Odins vs PyMC-Marketing
PyMC-Marketing is the open framework closest to our own stack, and the most capable of the three. It is also the one that asks the most of your team. Which side of that trade you are on decides this comparison.

Credit first: the most capable framework.
If we were building MMM in-house, this is the framework we would look at first. We say that in sales meetings too.
- The most customizable of the open frameworks: custom priors, hierarchical structures, user-defined saturation and seasonality
- The only one of the three with a time-varying media baseline
- Maintained by PyMC Labs on top of the large, active PyMC community
- In skilled hands it can model almost anything a business can ask of MMM
Same statistics, different owner.
We do not claim a methodological gap against PyMC-Marketing. We claim an operating-model gap: it is code you must staff, host, validate and maintain, and Odins is the same statistics delivered end to end.
- First value in weeks, without hiring for Bayesian expertise first
- Priors set as a discipline for data-sparse markets, not left as an exercise for the reader
- Time-varying saturation curves as standard: a channel's diminishing returns can shift by season, which none of the open frameworks ships out of the box
- Monthly retraining, human review and verification are part of the product
- No key-person risk: the model does not leave when your data scientist does
Channel contribution, 80% ranges
from the posteriorA tight range is a decision. A wide range is a test plan, with cost boundaries.
The choice
Who should choose which.
This one really is about your team. The framework is excellent; the question is who operates it.
Choose PyMC-Marketing if
- You have data scientists with real Bayesian experience and the mandate to own a model
- You need custom model structures no product will give you
- Modeling is a capability you want in-house for the long run
Choose Odins if
- You want the same Bayesian quality without staffing for it
- Total cost of ownership and time to value decide, not the license price
- The marketing team, not just the analysts, has to act on the output
The honest overlap
The 2026 academic review puts it plainly: PyMC-Marketing is the most flexible of the open frameworks, and the one that demands the most expertise. That sentence is the whole comparison.
Frequently asked questions.
Is Odins built on PyMC-Marketing?
No. Odins runs its own Bayesian MMM stack. It is the open framework closest to how we work, and we follow the project closely.
How fast is a first model, honestly?
The 2026 review estimates up to two weeks for a novice's first PyMC-Marketing run, after the data is prepared, and before anything like retraining, an interface or verification exists. An Odins model is live in 4 to 6 weeks including the data work, and it comes with all three.
Doesn't PyMC-Marketing have time-varying effects too?
Partly, and the distinction matters. The 2026 review notes it is the only open framework with a time-varying media baseline: the level of media contribution can move over time. The saturation curves themselves, where a channel's diminishing returns live, are a separate thing: Odins ships them time-varying as standard, so a channel's response can shift by season. A skilled team could build that in PyMC-Marketing, which is this comparison in miniature: possible in the framework, standard in the product.
Why does the academic review rate PyMC-Marketing's automation risk as low?
Not because the framework is safer, but because, in the authors' words, users without solid statistics and coding skills are unlikely to get it working at all. The skill requirement is the safety mechanism.
What does Odins cost compared to running PyMC-Marketing in-house?
The framework is free; the operation is not. Budget for data science salaries, months of build time and permanent maintenance, then compare that against a subscription. For most mid-market teams the in-house math does not close.
Can our data scientists still look inside the Odins model?
Yes. Saturation curves, contributions, priors and forecast-versus-actuals are all visible in the platform, and we walk technical teams through the full specification during onboarding.
