Odins vs Circana

Circana, built on IRI and NPD, bought Nielsen's marketing mix modeling business in 2025 and runs MMM on its Liquid Data platform and store-level point-of-sale data. Here is what Circana does well, and where a managed model that learns from any sales signal fits better.

Circana facts: circana.com home and marketing mix modeling pages, Circana's completion notice for the Nielsen MMM acquisition (21 August 2025) and its Marketing Foresight announcement (October 2025), read October 2026. Circana does not publish pricing or a model refresh cadence.

The honest read

Credit first: Circana has data few can match.

Circana tracks 42 million CPG and general merchandise items across 477,000 stores, by its own count, and since August 2025 it also owns the former Nielsen MMM business. For brands sold through retail, that is a strong foundation for a marketing mix model.

  • Store-level point-of-sale and causal data, modeled at store level rather than by region
  • More than 100 data scientists, analysts and consultants on marketing mix
  • More than 10,000 industry benchmarks
  • Marketing Foresight for simulations, with self-service or fully consultative delivery
The difference

A model built on the sales signal you already have.

Circana's strength is retail data, and if your sale happens in a store it tracks, that matters. Many businesses sell somewhere else: on their own site, through applications and subscriptions, or through a sales team. Odins learns from the signal your business produces and runs the model for you.

  • Orders, applications, leads or revenue: the model learns from the sales data your business already records
  • TV, radio, OOH and print in one Bayesian model per market, next to pricing and promotions
  • Priors set with your team in 2 to 3 working sessions, from spend history, digital saturation signals and structured interviews
  • Forecasts stored before actuals arrive and checked at each monthly retrain, while data flows in daily and scenarios run any time, also from Claude via the Odins MCP

Channel contribution, 80% ranges

from the posterior
Search 14 to 16% optimize
Social 9 to 13% optimize
Display 2 to 9% test first

A tight range is a decision. A wide range is a test plan, with cost boundaries.

The choice

Who should choose which.

Both model media against sales. The right choice starts with where your sales happen.

Choose Circana if

  • Your brand sells through retailers that Circana tracks at store level
  • Retail benchmarks and category data matter as much as the model
  • You want the choice between self-service and a large consulting team

Choose Odins if

  • Your sales happen online, through applications or subscriptions, or through a sales team
  • You want the data, model and recommendation run for you and reviewed by a person
  • You want scenarios and forecasts any time, priced for the budget the model optimizes

The honest overlap

Both model media against sales and both offer simulations. The difference starts with the data. Ask each vendor which sales signal the model will learn from in your business, and how it handles a channel whose spend has barely varied.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Did Circana buy Nielsen's marketing mix modeling?

Yes. Circana completed its acquisition of Nielsen's marketing mix modeling business on 21 August 2025, after announcing the deal in August 2024. The business joined Circana's media team alongside NCSolutions. We cover what that means for Nielsen buyers on Odins vs Nielsen.

What is Circana Marketing Foresight?

Circana describes Marketing Foresight as a forward-looking marketing mix modeling tool powered by AI, for simulations and optimization, updated in October 2025 with always-on access. In Odins, scenarios and forecasts run any time in the platform or from Claude via the Odins MCP, on a model retrained monthly with data that flows in daily.

How much does Circana MMM cost?

Circana does not publish pricing for its marketing mix modeling. Odins is a subscription priced for the budget it optimizes, for companies with a marketing budget from EUR 1M to several hundred million a year, with the team included and no data science hires needed.

Does marketing mix modeling need retail point-of-sale data?

No. A marketing mix model needs a sales signal that moves with your marketing, measured over time. For a brand sold in stores, that can be store sales. For a bank, an insurer or an online retailer, it is applications, policies or orders from its own systems. Odins builds the model on that signal.

Is Circana the same company as NIQ?

No. Circana was formed from IRI and NPD. NIQ (NielsenIQ) is a separate company, independent of Nielsen since March 2021, and launched its own marketing mix modeling in October 2024.

What are the best alternatives to Circana?

It depends on what you need from the model. We compared five options, with sources and who each one fits, on a separate page: the best Circana alternatives. Odins is on the list, and we say so up front.
